Thinking about Progress: From Science to Philosophy

Is there progress in philosophy? If so, how much? Philosophers have recently argued for a wide range of answers to these questions, from the view that is no whatsoever philosophy has provided all big philosophical questions. However, views are difficult compare and evaluate, because they rest on very different assumptions about conditions under which would make progress. This paper looks comparatively mature debate scientific inspiration formulate four distinct accounts progress, terms truthlikeness, problem-solving, knowledge, understanding. Equally importantly, outlines common framework understand evaluate accounts. We distill series lessons this exercise, help pave way more fruitful discussion future.
